Shanda Willis McDonald is a rock hound, artist, and folk musician living in her childhood hometown of Shawnee, Oklahoma. Her illustrations in Good Night, Trilobite were inspired by a fossil hunting trip to a site near Sulphur, Oklahoma, with the book's author, Steve Vanlandingham, and friends from the Shawnee Gem and Mineral Club. Steve Vanlandingham is a folk musician, educator, and amateur paleontologist. He holds a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Oklahoma, where he also studied archaeology and earned special education certification to teach kindergarten through twelfth grade. He has taught world geography, music appreciation, sports, and other academic subjects to special education students of various ages. He also volunteers at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History in Norman, Oklahoma, working in the invertebrate paleontology collection.
