The purpose of the study was to analyze governance from a multidisciplinary approach in Higher Education Institutions. In order to respond to this approach, governance and its types and the principles of governance were defined. The study was supported by the following theorists: Martínez (2011), Neave (2001), Bolaños (2010), Calanche (2010), Varela (2010), López (2009), among others. From all these theories it can be deduced that governance in the university can be conceived as the perception of the university community of the convergence and relevance of university actions and decisions aimed at achieving the institutional mission, according to the expectations of the community. The analysis of the functioning of the organizations identifies as fundamental aspects the capacity they have to make decisions, linked to the allowed and real autonomy, the people related to them, within the wide spectrum of directive models that go from the assembly to the unipersonal, and the internal or external mechanisms of verification that are established.
