The purpose behind writing this book is to study postmodern novels and mainly what Linda Hutcheon calls "historiographic metafiction." The novel that I'm tackling subverts the conventional historical representation and problematize history. By the end of the first part of my book, the reader will be able to learn about the theoretical background that I'm going to refer to in my analysis of Graham Swift's Waterland. The reader will be able to know how Waterland is an example of the postmodern historiography thanks to its stress on the limits of history in representing the real.
