Howington was raised in Wyoming, where she attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She has worked as a secretary in numerous positions in state government, including in a work release program and in Child Protective Services, and, together with her husband, she raises beef cattle in Alabama. Ms. Howington enjoyed rodeoing-barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, and team roping. She is an active member of Evergreen United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and working in children's education.
