Yet despite the critical role they played in maritime operations, little information is available about these hard-working men and the ships they called home. Author Paul J. Mason provides an illustrated history of lighthouse tenders that served on "The Lakes," complete with rare photos and fascinating back stories. Great Lakes history buffs will enjoy learning about these forgotten ships and crews, and their place in maritime's golden age.

Paul J. Mason was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The SOO! One cannot live in the SOO without developing a love and awe of the Great Lakes. Paul's natural draw to the history of the Lakes grew with his special interest in the U.S. Lighthouse Service, U.S. Lighthouse Tender Service, and the U.S. Coast Guard. His grandfather, Richard Burdeno, was chief engineer on the USLHT Clover, and his uncle, Harry Devreau, was a Master Chief in the Coast Guard. After college and a business career of over forty years, Paul sold his manufacturing business to a group of investors and started his "second career," known as retirement, at age sixty-eight. Being a Type A personality, he kept busy by playing tennis, restoring antique wood boats, sailing on tall ships (traditional sailing ships) as a crew member on the Great Lakes and North Atlantic Ocean. Paul joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and served as a volunteer crew member on a Coast Guard 25-foot patrol boat at U.S. Coast Guard (AUXOP) Station Green Bay (Wisconsin) until that station was deactivated in 2020. Paul lives in Green Bay, with his two sons and one daughter, son-in-law, and four grandchildren all residing in the immediate area.
