Chiapas Falls was a place Dana wanted nothing to do with, in fact, she felt this way for a very long time. Her father's death only heightened the feeling. An argument with Robert, her estranged brother caused Dana to flee the funeral home, leaving her feeling rejected, alone and venerable. To top the unsettling evening off, arriving home she discovers her young neighbour was murdered. Jake Turner, recently moved to the sleepy town of Chiapas Falls to take on the role of detective. For Helen, a receptionist at the station, it was love at first site when she set her eyes on his handsome looks and his charming personality. She quickly staked her claim on Jake, who wants no part of their one-sided affair. Jake investigates the murder of the young girl, from Dana's building. When Helen realizes the case is bringing Dana and Jake closer together she takes matters into her own hands. Jake invites Dana to his home unaware that Helen is there. At seeing them together, Helen causes a scene, which makes Dana think there is more to the relationship between Helen and Jake then he is willing to admit. Because of Helen's obsessive attachment towards Jake, Dana decides to put some distance between them and turns to her brother's friend, Eric for consolation. Jake sets matters straight with Helen and agrees to stay away from Dana. Because Dana is too much of a distraction, it distorts Jake's ability to center his attention on the case. His lack of focus lands both him and Dana in the killer's hands.
