When the German Army encircled the British Expeditionary Force in Dunkirk, Canada expanded its commitment to the war effort. The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment was created, initially as an infantry unit, but it was converted into an armored regiment in January 1942. On June 6, 1944, the regiment landed on the beaches of Normandy as part of the exploitation force for 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. The next day, it fought the first Allied tank battle in Normandy. Thereafter, the regiment fought in every major battle until the end of the war: the Battle for Caen, the Battle for Verrières Ridge, the night assault in Operation TOTALIZE, the closing of the Falaise Gap, the fighting in the Forêt de la Londe, the clearing of the Scheldt Estuary, the Hochwald, the Battle of the Rhineland, and the clearing of Belgium and Holland. Discover the fascinating history of an elite Canadian regiment that played a critical role in defeating Germany during World War II in this detailed military history.
