Green manures can promote the addition of extra amounts of plant residues to the soil and contribute to an increase in organic matter, generating sustainability in agro-ecosystems. With this in mind, the aim of this study was to assess the behavior and potential of annual and perennial species for green manures in the micro-region of Brejo Paraiba. The design used was a randomized block design, with eight treatments and four blocks. The treatments consisted of the species Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Canavalia ensiformis, Dolichos lablab, Pennisetum glaucum, Mucuna pruriens, Estilozobium aterrimum and Neonotonia wightii. The variables analyzed were coverage rate, plant height and diameter, length of the vegetative cycle, correlation between leaf size, chlorophyll content, SPAD index and foliar nitrogen content in the initial period of development, fresh and dry phytomass, accumulation and content of nutrients in phytomass in the flowering and fruiting periods.
