Pulses contribute as a major source of dietary protein for the large portion of vegetarian population of the world. Pulses also play an important role by fixing biological nitrogen and thus enhance the soil fertility. Earlier works on greengram were based mostly on biometrical traits and less importance was given to physiological traits. Similarly, the reports on the physiological and genetic basis of heterosis are very meager in greengram. Among the pulses, greengram plays a vital role due nutritional quality, short duration, high protein and suitability for multiple cropping systems, the field experiments were planned out to elicit information on biochemical, biophysical and morpho-physiological characters, their interactions, heterosis and genetics.
