"This delightful book is 'the way we were.' A nostalgic evocation of growing up in 1940s country and city in Queensland, Australia. Des and I shared the same times and I can vouch for the authenticity of those long ago years. These are the words we used, the things we enjoyed. We were fortunate that for both of us our childhoods were secure and strengthened by family love." Earle Cross, Australia "In this book the powerful effect of friendship and relationship so openly narrated from such a young and tender heart transcends everything else." Geraldine Schwartz, Canada

Autorenporträt
Desmond Berghofer seen here in an affectionate moment with grandson, Will, lives in Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of three novels and other works of non-fiction. None has given him more pleasure in the writing than Growing Up Grandpa in which he re-creates his life up to the age of 13 in Queensland, Australia. Desmond wishes his own grandchildren, and indeed all children, to know that grandpas were also small boys once. They might grow up to become Grandpa, but they will always lay claim to that one special time in their lives when everything was an adventure. To share it so many years later with new young minds is a special joy. Desmond is seen on the front cover with Will's older brother, Ben, in his front garden in Vancouver.
