Sugarcane is most important sugar and one of the main foreign earning crop of India. It is cultivated in 44.08 lakh hectares area with annual production 2946.56 lakh tonnes (2009). India ranks second both in area and production just followed by Brazil which have area of 53.43 lakh hectares and production is 3862 lakh tonnes. Madhya Pradesh has total area of 0.96 lakh hectares under sugarcane cultivation with production 40.75 lakh tonnes (Cooperative Sugar, March 2009, Vol-40, No.7). But the area and production of Madhya Pradesh is very low as compared to other states and average of country.
