His gambler mentor is shot and killed in a saloon in northeastern Missouri after the Civil War has begun. Emerson falls in with guerilla fighters. Union soldiers declare him to be a wanted man. As he flees the soldiers, he encounters the daughter of a farmer trying to find survival in the middle of two warring factions. The daughter, however is enamored with the story of Quantrill's wife Katy. She is attracted to Emerson.

J. J. Zerr began writing in 2008 and has published nine novels and a book of short stories.Zerr enlisted in the US Navy after high school. While in the service, he earned a bachelor and a master's degree in engineering disciplines. During Vietnam, he flew more that 300 combat missions. He retired after thirty-six years of service and worked in aerospace for eleven years. He and his wife, Karen, reside in St. Charles MO.
