Regeneration is the reproduction or reconstruction of a lost or damaged tissue through the formation of a new one that can reproduce the form, function and structure of original tissues. Tissue regeneration is a complex process that needs a sequence of molecular events, such as cell adhesion, migration, multiplication and differentiation. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using barrier membranes is based on the concept of epithelial exclusion in order to promote the healing of periodontal tissues in such a way that the original structure and function is preserved. The concepts of Guided Tissue Regeneration along with the incorporation of barrier membranes in clinical practice, have changed the outlook for regeneration in endodontics and significantly in bone augmentation therapeutics.
