The faculty of Information and Communication
Technology at Tshwane University of Technology is
faced with the decision by the Senate of TUT to move
the faculty to the Soshanguve learning site
(Schoeman, 2005). This move will impose strain upon
the current limited resources of the faculty on the
new campus. Thus the study suggests the need for
guidelines for the implementation of a Wireless
Local Area Network for the learners to learn
anytime, anywhere, and work without disruption in
the Soshanguve learning site. An investigation into
a WLAN based infrastructure will be an advantage for
the faculty in respect of ease of installation, low
installation, and maintenance costs.

A non-empirical research using a qualitative
approach with a literature review and observation
methods were used. The nature of the research
process was to produce guidelines for the
implementation of a secured WLAN for the learners in
the faculty using an analytical form of reasoning.

The study confidently maintains that WLAN will
assist learners of the faculty to learn anytime and
anywhere. This could lead to an increase in
throughput rates for the faculty.
