This book is a journey of exploration into the African continent through the fabulous history of Spanish Guinea. An exotic land that invoked the epic, the opportunities and the fantasy of empire. And whose name - with a Spanish surname - resounded for almost a century linked to tumultuous periods in our annals. Today's Equatorial Guinea emerged during the Spanish influence between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book chronicles this African land, which became part of a dying Spanish empire, from the mid-19th century, through the decisive period of Franco's regime, until independence in 1968. Although the baby boom generation still remembers in their school books the days when Guinea was just another province of Spain, independence marked the beginning of a process of oblivion and ignorance of our own history in Africa. Now, we recover those memories, with the aim of shedding light on this complex and often forgotten history. With a rigorous and accessible approach, through testimonies and accounts of Spaniards and Guineans, the reader will come to understand the political, cultural and economic circumstances of the land that would become Equatorial Guinea. A forgotten and crucial chapter in the shared history of Spain and Africa.
