This book assesses the Gujii - Sidaama relations from about 1850 to 1974 chronologically. Accordingly, there are three distinct phases in almost one and a quarter-century period of the Gujii - Sidaama relations. The first is from about 1850 to 1889. During this period they existed as independent political units. The whole period was characterized by bitter hostility between the two peoples. The shortage of land among the Sidaama clans, which forced them to expand in the pastoral territory of the Gujii, was the chief economic factor for their hostility. The military requirements of their traditional socio-political institutions exacerbated their hostility. Although this hostility seems to have determined the pattern of their relations, it hardly hindered the general social, economic and cultural interactions between them.
