Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer born in Providence, Rhode Island. Best known for his work in the science, fantasy and horror fiction genres, Lovecraft's writings are now studied worldwide. One of his most famous creations is the Cthulhu Mythos. Although he was unable to support himself through writing during his lifetime, Lovecraft's legacy has lived on. Many well-established horror authors have cited Lovecraft as a major influence, including Stephen King.

Unbeschreiblicher Schrecken, die Schrecken der Unbeschreiblichkeit. Der größte Horrorvisionär der Moderne: Howard Phillips Lovecraft, geboren vor 125 Jahren, am 20. August 1890 in Providence im US-Bundesstaat Rhode Island. Ein schmales Werk, das alle in Bann zog, von Stephen King bis Alain Resnais (der ihm in der einsamen Schriftstellerfigur seines Films „Providence“ ein Denkmal setzte), der stets die gleiche Geschichte erzählte – von einer Exkursion, die auf verbotenes, die geistige Gesundheit zerstörendes Terrain führte, wo Raum und Zeit aus den Fugen sind, uralte monströse Götter hausen und auf Auferstehung warten, wie „Cthulhu“, unförmig, schleimig, grün: „Die Handschrift des armen Johansen versagte fast, da er dies beschrieb. Zwei der sechs Männer, die das Schiff nie wieder erreichten, starben in diesem verfluchten Augenblick, wahrscheinlich aus reinem Grauen.
