The Ramini Republic. Emerging from the bitter flame of civil war as the magical power of the tyrannical Chrysomancers is finally weak enough for them to be overthrown. A scientific, democratic government, believing in progress and equality The Novandik Symbol of that progress: a locomotive-engine which will draw a train across the Republic, coast to coast, heralding an era of technology. Aboard are representatives of Ramini's new age, and maybe more than one whose only wish is to see the Novandik fail. Whatever the cost. For government and wizards alike, the stakes are too high for failure

Mike Chinn lives in Birmingham UK with his wife Caroline and their guinea pigs. The first collection of the 1930s set adventures of his occult investigator Damian Paladin, THE PALADIN MANDATES (The Alchemy Press, 1998), was short-listed for the British Fantasy Award in 1999; and a second Paladin collection, WALKERS IN SHADOW, was published by Pro Se Productions in 2017. A revised and expanded (by 10,000 words) edition of PALADIN MANDATES was published by Pro Se in 2020. In the second issue of OCCULT DETECTIVE QUARTERLY "The Black Tarot" teamed Paladin and Leigh Oswin with the eponymous investigator; and the newest additions to this expanding pulpy universe are the submarine USS Oswin and crew: first sailing in the Damian Paladin story "Cradle of the Deep" (issue one of the reborn STARTLING STORIES magazine), then striking out alone in "Echoes of Days Passed" (THE ALCHEMY PRESS BOOK OF HORRORS 3: A MISCELLANY OF MONSTERS). Both stories, plus a previously unpublished novella, were collected in DRAWING DOWN LEVIATHAN in 2024
