When Hal and his friends try to save his family farm by selling slimy potatoes to Japan, they attract the attention of Hamilton Steel, who pushes Hal to demonstrate a fake underwater farm. However, when the true dangers of their potatoes are revealed, Hal must navigate a perilous path to rescue his family's legacy and avoid violating Japanese trade law, escalating the stakes in their fight for the agricultural industry's future. Hal Driver, a recent Harvard business school graduate, has just landed a job at a prestigious investment banking firm in New York. He's focused on his career and making a name for himself in the finance world. But everything changes when he receives a desperate call from his parents: their family farm is in foreclosure and about to be seized by the IRS. Hal's dad has suffered a heart attack, and he's left with no choice but to return home and try to save the family farm. But when he arrives, he realizes the situation is even worse than he thought. The crop of sub-standard potatoes is failing, and there's no market for them. Hal is determined to find a solution and save his family's legacy. He turns to two of his old buddies, Steve and Debit Cash, and together, they come up with a wild plan: they'll conquer the Japanese market with their slimy spuds. The trio creates a stir by promoting the potatoes' longevity qualities. They encounter Yasumi, the beautiful daughter of a Japanese food magnate, and convince her and her father that these rotting spuds could be the answer to world hunger. Hal and Yasumi are attracted to each other, and the spuds only enhance their passionate relationship. But their scheme gets more complicated when Hamilton Steel, a powerful New York leveraged-buyout trader, thinks he can force a hedged position on the Japanese stock exchange. He mentors Hal through the entire joint venture-LBO process, but the catch is that Hal has to actually demonstrate that he has a working underwater farm. Desperate to pull off the charade, Hal creates a fantasy farm in an abandoned warehouse full of unusual paraphernalia and strange characters. He's about to convince everyone that his underwater farm is real when a lab test reveals that the delicacy may be more potent than anyone bargained for. In the end, Hal realizes that sometimes the most unexpected and unconventional solutions can save the day. He discovers that there's more to life than just making money and that family, love, and the pursuit of a good spud can be just as fulfilling.
