José Campion McCarthy est née dans un petit village français. Elle a observé les nombreux membres de sa famille, surtout ses parents, et a été témoin d'événements historiques-de l'occupation de la ferme de ses parents pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale jusqu'aux manifestations de mai 1968-et a appris comment l'histoire avait influencé les vies de sa famille et de ses amis. Pendant une année de travail en Allemagne elle a rencontré des personnes qui lui ont raconté leurs expériences de la guerre.Le Hasard et les Choix explore son développement personnel, façonné par la religion dans laquelle elle a été élevée, une forme familiale de sévère dépression, et la rencontre de personnes qui ont changé le cours de sa vie. La façon dont elle a réagi à des événements hors de son contrôle a fait d'elle la personne qu'elle est devenue. L'éducation l'a menée à la médecine, aux statistiques médicales, et à la psychiatrie. Par hasard, un voyage aux États-Unis en 1968 l'a conduite au mariage et à la vie en Amérique, où elle a élevé ses enfants et exercé la psychiatrie.
