Things had been going so well; I felt like holding my breath to keep something bad from happening. And, as it turned out, perhaps I should have. Because, of course, in the way of life, something bad did happen. As I picked up Jacob from his nap, I noticed he felt a little warm. "Perhaps a summer cold is coming on", I thought. I cradled him to me, and he smiled. When I asked him, however, if he wanted some juice, he shook his head, "no". This was unusual. I took his temperature. It was a 103-degrees. This was not just a little warm. This was a full-blown fever. I called the doctor's office; they had me bring him in right away. I hurriedly dialed Ian to let him know what was transpiring. "I'm leaving work right now," he replied. "No, don't bother. Kids get fevers all the time." Just wait there and I'll tell you what the doctor said. The next thing I knew , we were on the way to the ER. My heart was so full of feeling for Jacob; I truly thought it would break. C'mon little buddy, you can do it. Fight this illness with everything you have.
