He was the son of Nefermaat, a relative of Khufu, the Old Kingdom pharaoh whose pyramid it is. Archaeologists have found mentions of Hemiunu with titles roughly translated as Master of works and Vizier. In the latter office he succeeded Kanefer and his father Nefermaat.
