Accumulated evidence has demonstrated that both oxidative stress and abnormal cytokine production, especially tumor necrosis factor- (TNF), IL-1beta, IL-6 play important etiological roles in the pathogenesis of hepatotoxicity. Aqueous extraction of Tagetes patula linn that have both antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties, represent promising therapeutic interventions for hepatotoxicity. Animals were randomly assigned into five groups, containing six animals in each group. Group I- Control.; Group II - Ethanol (0.5ml/100g) p.o for 28 consecutive days; Group III- Silymarin 100mg/kg + Ethanol p.o; Group IV - HDTP 200 mg/kg /p.o + Ethanol 0.5ml/100g; Group V - HDTP 400 mg/kg/p.o + Ethanol 0.5ml/100g.Various biochemical, antioxidant, relative gene expression and histological parameters were assessed in serum, and liver. HDTP significantly improves the biochemical changes of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, TC, TB, TP, LDL, HDL level in serum against ethanol induced hepatotoxicity in rats. HDTPtreated group showed, significant increase of SOD, CAT, GSH release when compared to negative control group. HDTP treated group showed significant decrease in release of pro inflammatory cytokine like TNF- .
