The small, single-storey cottage was built adjacent the harbour foreshore, primarily of lime-washed sandstone. It was used for a variety of purposes over the years, and more recently has been restored and classified as an historic site, under the administration of the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales. It now functions as an information centre for the Sydney Harbour National Park, although it is not contained within the park.
