A four-year-old boy lives with his mother, father and a sister one year younger than him in a rural area near the sea. The boy and his sister explore the world around them, but their mother constantly brings them home. At first glance, the story is simple, but it also raises essential questions about existence. In vivid and moving detail, Jon Fosse captures the little boy's thoughts and reflections. His observations, longings, loneliness and the deeply inexplicable are conveyed with the precision and linguistic beauty customary for the 2023 Nobel Prize winner in literature.
