Samantha (Sam) Kelly grew up between foster homes and more often than not on the streets of London during the seventies and early eighties. As a middle adolescent, Sam starts to make a small living by busking and picking up the odd music gig while she searches for Robert, her American father, who disappeared when she was a child. The plan would have been that father and daughter reunite and live as a family, but Robert never sent for her. Sam remembers Robert's fondness for the city of Berlin, where he lived for some years as a young man after WWII and where he first became a jazz musician. Robert once said to Sam that if they ever became separated they would meet by the Berlin Wall on the 4th of July, American Independence Day. As the years go by and Sam is finally old enough to travel, she visits Berlin on a yearly basis in the hope that her father will be waiting for her, but during one of these visits fate decides to step in and set Sam on a course that will change her life and lead her along a path filled with discoveries about her childhood. This is a story of love and loss, the courage to let go of a painful past and embrace new possibilities, learning how to open up to love again, and above all this is a story about gaining the life wisdom that will hopefully lead Sam to happiness. Sam's journey takes place against the backdrop of the London music gig world and the Cold War era of Berlin and its iconic Wall.
