High Speed 1 (HS1), officially known as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and originally as the Continental Main Line (CML), is a 108-kilometre (67-mile) high-speed railway line running from London, through Kent to the British end of the Channel Tunnel. The CTRL project was one of the United Kingdom's largest civil engineering projects, encompassing many new bridges and combined tunnels nearly as long as the Channel Tunnel itself. During the construction of the CTRL a major archaeology project was conducted alongside the work. In 2002 the CTRL project was awarded the "Major Project Award" at the British Construction Industry Awards. During and after construction there have been several periods of financial difficulties, both with cost overruns and difficulties with organisations behind the constuction project, and eventually the completed line came into public hands in 2009 with plans to sell it back to the private sector under new ownership.
