This is the question that Hippy Potto’s best friend Birdie asks him as they drift off to sleep one night. After listening to all of his mother’s exciting bedtime stories, Hippy Potto knows that the world is full of great possibilities and that with a little bit of imagination and hard work, they are all within reach. With ideas of travel and adventure firmly etched into his mind and a smile on his face, Hippy Potto drifts off into a magical dream filled with excitement in the charming new illustrated children’s book by Chynna Chiarini, Hippy Potto’s Dream Adventure
Set amidst Chiarini’s black and white pen illustrations, the story leads Hippy Potto through the many possibilities that life has to offer him. From exploring distant lands, to playing his first game of baseball, to figure skating, to becoming “the world’s first hippo acrobat,” Hippy Potto experiences it all. He meets a variety of new friends and acquaintances, each of whom make a significant impression and guide him through his “fascinating pseudo-reality.”
But while he ventures to the bottom of the sea and the furthest reaches of outer space, Hippy Potto never forgets to be grateful for all the comforts of home and friendship that await him no matter how far he has traveled. When he wakes up the next morning, he is excited to be back home and to share the tale of his adventures with all of his friends.
“Why it was the grandest adventure any Hippo has ever been on,” Hippy Potto announced to all his friends that had gathered around. “Was I there too?” Birdie asked. “My friend, you were with me nearly everywhere I went.” “Why was I not everywhere?” the little bird asked in confusion. “Just like your racing adventure…” Hippy Potto explained, “sometimes a hippo needs to fly a little on his own. But don’t fear my dear friend, for you are always with me even if you cannot be by my side.”
According to Chiarini, Hippy Potto’s Dream Adventure incites creativity, inspires children to follow their own dreams, and sparks “discussions in which children and adults alike can share their own goals and adventures with one another.”
Chynna Chiarini lives in New York City and holds a bachelor’s degree in fine art from St. John’s University. Hippy Potto’s Dream Adventure is her first book, although she is already working on a second.
