There was an innate desire by many of these pioneers to become independent and mimic the free enterprise system so common to this country by becoming entrepreneurs. Their efforts showed an unusual amount of wisdom in that each business enterprise focused on the needs of a people in a segregated society of unequal financial opportunity.
