The Pennsylvania 147th Infantry Regiment was organized at Loudoun Heights, Va., October 10, 1862, from surplus men of the 28th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, as Companies "A," "B," "C," "D" and "E." Companies "F," "G" and "H" were organized at Harrisburg, Pa., September 29 to November 20. Company "I" was organized at Philadelphia October 10, 1862, and Company "K" was organized at Philadelphia February, 1864. This is one of the few regiments which spent significant time both in Virginia and in the Atlanta and Carolinas Campaign. They participated in most of the major battles in Virginia prior to Gettysburg, then in the Atlanta Campaign beginning with the battle of Lookout Mountain. The 147th ended the war in north Carolina, then marched to Washington for the grand Review, before being discharged in July, 1865. Company A - Allegheny County and Philadelphia County Company B - Huntingdon County and in Tennessee Company C - Luzerne County Company D - Philadelphia County Company E - Philadelphia County Company F - Luzerne County Company G - Snyder County Company H - Berks County, Lehigh County, and Carbon County Company I - Philadelphia County Company K - Many men were transferred from other units
