Bill McLaughlin, the youngest of ten, grew up in rural West Tennessee. He left home at the age of fourteen in or order to achieve his goal of obtaining an education.After attending Memphis State College, he served in the military for three years, then moved to Chattanooga, TN. There he joined his lifelong friend, Raymond Hale, Jr. in the real estate business. Subsequently, he accepted a position with Interstate Life Insurance Company in the real estate investment department. While working at Interstate, he completed his formal education at the University of Tennessee, receiving a BS degree in Business Administration. In 1972 he and his wife moved back to West Tennessee where he worked in the construction and mortgage business until he joined Union Planters Bank in 1980. He worked in a real estate and banking environment for thirty-seven years and achieved a SRPA appraisal designation from the Society of Real Estate Appraisers. He retired in 2007 as Senior Vice President and Regional Senior Real Estate Credit Officer of Regions Bank. Bill and his wife Martha joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church in 1972 and have remained members for fifty years. Bill chaired several committees through his tenure at Emmanuel, has been church historian for twenty years, and has written the church history.
