Archaeological evidence suggests substantial pre-contact Norwalk inhabitancy by human beings; artifacts found near Ward Street date back 5000 years ago. The first recorded European contact with Norwalk took place in 1614. Dutch navigator Adriaen Block, trading fur with Native Americans along the Connecticut coast, mentioned a visit to the Norwalk Islands, which he called "The Archipelago". Norwalk was purchased in two separate transactions in 1640 and 1641 by Daniel Patrick and Roger Ludlow.
