She was laid down at the Fairfield shipyards, Govan on 31 January 1913 and launched on 4 November 1914. She was completed in February 1916. The contract for the construction of the Valiant was given to The Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Limited. She was laid down in the same berth where the battle cruiser HMS Indomitable had been built. On the construction of Valiant by Admiralty contract, Fairfields lost Pds. 78,836. Her turbines were manufactured by Fairfields, and her armour plate was provided by William Beardmore and Company.
