Albert Verwey (1865-1937) behoorde tot de Tachtigers, een revolutionaire groep schrijvers die aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw de Nederlandse literatuur opschudden. Naast dichter was Verwey ook een actief vertaler en letterkundige, al heeft hij nooit een wetenschappelijke opleiding afgerond.
