Autorenporträt
(Estados Unidos, 1914-1972), llamado al nacer John Smith, Berryman adoptó el nombre de su padrastro tras el suicidio de su padre, acontecimiento que marcaría su labor poética. Se graduó en Columbia en 1936 y tras enseñar en Harvard y Princeton, se incorporó como profesor a la Universidad de Minnesota donde permanecería hasta su muerte. En 1948 publicó su primer libro importante de poesía The Dispossessed, al que seguiría Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956). Sus 77 cantos del sueño (1965) le harían merecedor del Premio Pulitzer y unos años más tarde obtendría el National Book Award y el Bollingen Prize for Poetry por His Toys, His Dream, His Rest. John Berryman se suicidó en 1972. En la actualidad es considerado uno de los poetas estadounidenses más relevantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX.
