The book is focused on the urban poor environment. It is important to know the circumstances in which they are living. The location of settlement provides a framework to capture the combination of human and socioeconomic factors in explaining the variation in health status within the given population. In general, what people do is nearly always influenced by their social settings. The urban poor who are living in slums are most vulnerable due to the exclusionary attitude of the State towards the poor. The brutal physical and socio-economic environment leads to lacking social networks and monetising basic needs. These two factors also undermine the vulnerable population's capacities that affect their wellbeing.
