Rising income inequality is worrisome in developing countries because it manifests as hunger, poverty and conflict. It is harmful for the economic growth process because it creates a vicious cycle of underdevelopment. Poverty is deeply rooted in Northern Nigeria and linked to inequitable access to infrastructure, employment opportunities, wealth, human capital, and institutional support. The author is an agricultural economist and a research fellow at Institut Francais de Recherche en Afrique, Nigeria. Published an article on remittances and poverty in the Journal of economic reform and currently working on his doctoral thesis on the economic impact of climate change and food security in Nigeria.
