No one is able to imagine being suddenly in a war in modern times, without any chance of getting away especially if you are on your own.
However the reader has the oppurtunity to get an idea of what life might be like by reading the novel How I Live Now (Winner of the Printz award 2005) by Meg Rosoff and having a closer look on Daisy's feelings, thoughts and decisions.
The 15-year-old american girl Daisy is sent by her father to her Aunt Penn and to her cousins in England. She has many problems: She has a bad relationship to her father, she hates her pregnant step-mother, she has anorexia and she is very thin and shy.
In England she gets to know her cousin Edmond and they fall in love with each other.
Everything seems perfect, however a war finally starts and now Daisy has to see the reality and to understand that there are also worse things in life.
Everything changes in Daisy's life. While her aunt is in Oslo, she and her cousins have to fend for themselves. Parallel to their preparations, like hiding food in the barn, a big love develops between Daisy and Edmond.
However they are in a time where a war has broken out and they just take it seriously when they are seperated. Now the fight for surviving starts and Daisy has to take the responsibility for her younger cousin Piper, while they are trying to find the boys and to go back to their house.
Meg Rosoff is an author, who knows absolutely how teenagers may feel in many different and also really difficult situations. She can put herself in a young person's position and she is able to work out her feelings and thoughts. In addition to that, you have to mention the language, which is also a big success. This is why the reader is able to identify with Daisy.
The novel makes you think about what is really important in life and how much we exaggerate when we are sad about the littlest things and also stress about them.
