The need for such a search is caused by the fact that there are still no generally accepted answers to them. The author of the article, who devoted most of his life to the development of separation methods and proposed a number of new methods, has a sufficient basis for systematization and definition of the criteria by which it can be carried out. As a first criterion for systematization of separation methods are offered: the aggregate state of the phases formed in the process of separation, used for its implementation due to differences in the inter-phase distribution of separated substances, and in the latter case being the medium in which separation of substances is carried out under the influence of external forces applied to them. The second criterion is how the processes of formation of new phases, processes of interphase distribution or the nature of the forces that cause the spatial movement of particles of separable substances within one phase or the transition from one phase to another.According to the proposed criteria, all methods of separation of homogeneous mixtures of substances are divided into five groups.
