Among the major constraints in economic cultivation of brinjal, pest infestation causes heavy losses. The major insect pests of brinjal is shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee).Resistant, tolerant varieties form the principal component of Integrated Pest Management over which other components are built up. It contributes helpfully in IPM to protect the environment by reducing use of insecticides, and provides sustainable pest managements by safeguarding bio-agents.Leucinodes orbonalis Guen. causes great losses in Brinjal across the India and and other eggplant growing countries of the world, being an internal feeder it is difficult to control even by the pesticides. In such a situation, there is a need to develop another alternative, safer and poison free, sustainable method such as host plant resistance to suppress or minimize the pest population as a major tool of IPM through antibiosis, antixenosis and tolerance mechanism.Certain biochemicals and biophysical characters of brinjal plant play a great role in managing pest population of brinjal shoot and fruit borer.Resistant cultivars can reduce pests attack with other components of IPM in integrated manner.
