Nowadays, the economy and the functioning of its operators must contend with a variety of challenges and problems. The most important may include advancing all the time globalization processes as well as migration, social and political tensions, increased competition, changing expectations of the population, or environmental degradation. To persevere in such a turbulent environment, the individual and the economy must show some kind of flexibility in relation to emerging threats and opportunities. That flexibility is determined, among others, by human capital. The aim of this publication is to highlight the essence of human capital as determinants of socio-economic development and improvement of its quality in the light of different approaches.
