The cultivation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) has become one of the most important productive activities in Peru and other Latin American countries, as well as in African and Asian countries that are also large-scale producers, being one of the most exported agricultural products in recent years. Between 2014 - 2015, the estimated world production of cocoa was 4,236 thousand tons, and the world supply and demand of cocoa increased at an average annual growth rate of 2.5% in the last 50 years.
