I grew up in a Fundamentalist Christian home in the US Midwest. And in that singular era, in such a household, concepts like humanism were not only unwelcome, they were anathema. Verboten. 'Evil, ' even; secular humanism, the Fundamentalist community insisted throughout my youth, was opposed to the church. But that's not what I saw in humanism. I saw I was a place where gender and skin color made no difference; where there was no poverty, and copious opportunity; where "knowing one's place" meant nothing, because everyone was in the same place. I saw equality, reason, integrity, fairness, opportunity, community - ideals the New Testament conveyed, but which the church didn't truly aspire to. It took me a while to break away from my religious roots, but I have now lived many years among people with a very different vision of what saving humanity really means. I've invested deeply, and the essays herein will hopefully communicate some of the values and vision I've absorbed.
