Hundred Years, Hundred Pictures (Text in German) This book project is dedicated to an extraordinarily ambitious goal: to find the 100 photographs that relate both the history of our century and the history of photography. The book presents 100 photographs and artist-photographers, well known incunabula of the history of photography and little known works, discovered in the course of research for this project. The catalogue takes up the thread of history at the point at which photography abandoned its 19th-century documentary mandate and achieved a new self-concept as an art form. Told here is the history of the medium in the 20th century, which may be comprehended as a sequence of innovations unfolding in parallel to developments in other media, such as painting, sculpture, etc. The 100 images presented create a mosaic in which aesthetic evolution as well as the major movements of Modernism, New Objectivity, Surrealism, Cubism, Pop Art and many others are reflected. All functional applications of photography are represented, from documentary photography, fashion, dance and news photography to independent artistic photography. This volume is published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt on the Main.
