Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is the most important vegetable grown in the world, where it is cultivated in both tropical and temperate zones. The fruit has quite high quantity of vitamins A and C. It is also a high cash crop which is further augmented through processing . Studies have shown that tomato has a higher acreage of cultivation than any vegetable crop in the world. However, in most West African countries, it is grown mainly for domestic consumption. Tomato is of immense benefit to most families by providing good nutritional balance and boosts their income and standard of living. As a major horticultural crop, tomato has an estimated global production of over 120 million metric tons. About 1.2 billion tons of tomatoes are produced worldwide annually of which nematodes have been estimated to cause about 40% yield loss costing at least US$27 million in nematicides use alone.Studies have reported that tomato is one of the most susceptible vegetable crops and nematodes causes about 30 to 40% yield losses in tropical regions. The use of resistant varieties is promising method of controlling plant parasitic nematodes and the resistance is often managed by one or more genes.
