Charles Meeres was born in Aberdeen in 1894, and chose the army as a profession, training at Woolwich. He finished the course in 1915 He served in many of the great set-piece battles such as Loos in 1915, the Somme in 1916 and Arras in 1917. He continued in the army after the war and took on administrative posts especially in the Home Guard chain of command in the Second World War. Meeres died at Dartmouth in Devon in 1962. Frank Meeres is Charles's son and edited this first-ever published edition of the diary. He is Head of Norwich Record Office and a prominent local historian. He lives in Norwich.
