The book examines the Algerian and Arab identity issue through certain scriptural practices related to otherness. The study focuses on drawing a kind of archaeology of the modern Algerian novel in its crossing of the signs of history, culture and the world. The dialectic between tradition and modernity tragically raises the question of acculturation and the turbulent birth to history. The relationship to the Other, to oneself and to the world is dramatized through visions of the world that reflect both a memory unease and a thirst for modernity and emancipation. Torn between several determinations, often contradictory, the Algerian and Arab writer restores, even in his most fragmentary and partial approaches, a total vision of a world in the making, a world confronted with the great challenges of civilization.
