The Present book Identity Question African American Poetry: A Critical Study is a serious and comprehensive attempt to investigate the African American consciousness constructed in poetry composed by African American writers. In the present book, the efforts have been made to study the voices of Afro-Americans, with the canons of socio-religious, socio-economic and socio-psychological dimensions of oppressive race oriented social practices. African American poetry is deeply concerned with identity formation and its assertion to regain the self-confidence and self-worth of the American marginalized society. Looking at its immense value of reconstructing identity and providing specific rights into the question of the 'other' self, it is becoming obligatory to take up the issues raised by it and feed into literary understanding. The study has focused on the Afro-American poetry to unravel the unexplored social and cultural contents and their efforts at identity formation.
