The book deals with translation of idioms in fiction, as idioms are semantically noncompositional and ambiguous, preventing a word for word translation. The aim of this analysis is to present the problem of equivalence of idioms in the target language, to define the place of idioms in linguistic studies as well as their characteristic features and to find out what are systemic and functional equivalents of the compiled idioms. Efforts have been made to find out the existence or non-existence of Slovak idiomatic equivalents to examined idioms in language as a system. The selected corpus represents verbal core idioms, which were gathered with help of a monolingual idiomatic dictionary from literary works.
