Sadly, these struggles are not decreasing, but increasing due to the ever-changing pace of things. As life progresses and becomes more complex, so does the intensity of these individuals' symptoms. One growing challenge that has magnified many efforts to endure through these complexities has been the prevalence of autistic shutdown, also known as burnout. Autistic therapist Jessica Kitchens, has found that this particular battle is one that she and many of her clients face on a regular basis. Utilizing lived experience and her proclivity for research she shares her own struggles, along with the numerous factors, roots, and triggers that increase the prevalence of shutdown in all ages. She invites autistic individuals, family members, and the professionals working with them to read and possibly find ways to withstand and overcome this common struggle.

Jessica Kitchens, MS, MBA, LPC, LADAC, MAC, RPT, BCCSJessica is an autistic private practice therapist in NW Arkansas. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for 24 years and together they have five children, one son-in-law, one grandchild, and three dogs. She has called NW Arkansas home for the past 20 years and has been a therapist for the past 15 of those. She specializes in working with autistic and other neurodivergent populations, as well as substance misuse, addictions, and play therapy. Outside of her own private practice she also owns the first and only autistic-owned Neurodivergent-Affirming group counseling and consulting practice in NW Arkansas. She holds a BA in Human Services Counseling, a dual MS in Marriage and Family Therapy and Community Counseling, and an MBA with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship. She is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Change Leadership for Equity and Inclusion, with an emphasis on Community Leadership and Change. Her indigenous heritage is very important to her as she is a tribal member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi nation. In her spare time, she likes to research, read, write, run, hike, work out, dabble in arts and crafts on occasion, and spend time with her friends and family. Jessica has a strong love for working with neurodivergent individuals and hopes to make a brighter future for those in her community.
